About Small Clay Pots

A collection of pottery on a table.

Hello!

In 1980 I married my husband, a farmer, and began teaching high school art at Anamosa, Iowa, the birthplace of Grant Wood, painter of the most famous American painting, American Gothic.

This Navajo pottery technique was taught to me and my students 1994 by Christine McHorse (1948-2021) of Taos, New Mexico.

Christine’s awe-inspiring pottery is considered some of the best contemporary Navaho pottery in the United States, and her work is in collections all over the US, including the National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian, and many other museums.

Micaceous Pottery Techniques

There is a 30-step process to create these one of a kind paper-thin pots.  Isn't that crazy?

Each pot is thrown and burnished by hand into a beautiful 4-7 ounce form. Pots are then pit-fired in a hand-built outdoor kiln, where the fire and smoke creates an original pattern on each pottery piece.

After cooling for 24 hours, each pot is cleaned by hand. Six coats of varnish and lacquer are applied to create luster and shine. Every Small Clay Pot comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

Small Clay Pots are in very limited production, as pots are thrown and fired outdoors, according to the weather. Small Clay Pots are VERY thin, a hallmark of mica-infused pottery. By comparison, most handmade pottery is heavy and clunky.

All Small Clay Pots are less than 7 ounces, and have stood up to the rigors of an intense outdoor fire.
